> **Grow better crops by looking after your soil.** While a crop grows, you can water, feed, test and mulch its field. How well the soil was kept over the growing week decides the harvest: more of the crop, a **Fine** or **Choice** grade, and seed back to plant again. This guide walks through it, start to finish.

## How it works, in one line

**Touch a growing field → read how it feels → water, lime or mulch it when it needs it → a well-kept week harvests Fine or Choice.**

> **Nothing dies.** A field you never touch grows and harvests exactly as it always has. Care only ever adds.

## 1. The care menu

Touch a field while it’s **growing** and a care menu opens. Anyone the field’s security lets work it can use it. It works on **vineyards, fields, vegetable fields, wet fields and herb plots**.

| Action | You need | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Water** | water, and a worn **clay jar** | tops the soil’s moisture up |
| **Amend** | a fertiliser, and a worn **large bag** | moves the pH: **garden lime** raises it, **sulphur mulch** lowers it, the _fine_ kinds move it gently |
| **Test** | a worn **soil kit** | the exact pH and moisture, what the crop wants, and how the week is going |
| **Mulch** | reed, and a worn **small basket** | halves the drying for two days |
| **Assay** | a **vine assay kit** (vineyards only) | reveals one of the vine’s hidden genes |

- **One of each action a day** per field. A few visits a week is all it takes.
- **Each action costs a little energy.**
- **Bigger fields take more:** watering a small field or vineyard takes 1 water, a herb plot 2, a medium 5 and a large 10. Each watering also takes one use from your clay jar.

## 2. Read the soil

The field’s hover text tells you how it feels:

| Hover | Means |
| --- | --- |
| **Thriving** | pH and moisture both where the crop wants them |
| **Thirsty** | too dry |
| **Waterlogged** | too wet |
| **Sour soil** | pH too low: it wants lime |
| **Chalky soil** | pH too high: it wants sulphur mulch |

A **soil kit** gives you the exact numbers. What each crop wants is something you find out by testing, and your **Journal** remembers it for you.

## 3. Get it right

**Every crop has its own wants.** Grapes, for example, want pH 5.8–6.8 and moisture 35–85.

- **pH first.** Many soils sit just outside what the crop wants. A vineyard’s soil is a little sour, so it’s **lime** , not more water, that gets grapes into the band. Lime wears off slowly, so a second dose part way through the week keeps it there.
- **Water by timing, not amount.** Watering always fills the soil to the same level, so you choose _when_ to water. Water when it runs low.
- **Don’t overwater.** Some crops want it drier, and watering them too often leaves the field waterlogged. Once or twice costs a little; every day costs a grade.
- **Mulch when it’s already right.** Mulch slows the drying, so use it when the moisture is where you want it, not straight after watering.

> **A good week for grapes:** lime and water on the first day, lime and water again about halfway through, and one more watering near the end. Three visits.

## 4. What care pays

How long the field spends with its pH and moisture where the crop wants them over the growing week gives it a care score. The score decides the harvest:

| Grade | What you get |
| --- | --- |
| **Common** | the harvest as it always was |
| **Fine** | more crop, and **seed back for certain** , enough to replant |
| **Choice** | more again, and on a vineyard a **cutting** of the vine for the Grafting Table |

Fine and Choice crops **cook and brew into Fine and Choice dishes and drinks** , which restore more when you eat or drink them.

**Fields remember what grew last.** Rotating crops earns care points: a different crop family than last time helps, and a cereal after soybeans gets a nitrogen boost.

## 5. Your Journal

Everything your character learns is kept in your **Journal** on the website:

- **Crops:** each crop you’ve tested, what it wants and what you’ve seen.
- **Vines:** every gene your assays have revealed. Each assay shows one, and two always stay hidden.

Each field you care for also has its own page on the website, with its soil, its care log and its week.

## Where things come from

- **Soil kits** and **vine assay kits:** sold by the Masters.
- **Garden lime:** made in the **Compost Bin** , from dung and chalk from the **Chalk Pit**.
- **Water:** with your clay jar. **Reed:** gathered.

## Before you start

- **Update your fields** with the updater, so they have the care menu.
- **Wear the tool** for what you’re doing: clay jar, large bag, soil kit or small basket.
- **Carry the materials:** water, a fertiliser, reed.
- **Test first.** The numbers tell you whether it needs lime, water, or to be left alone.
