Bait is here: worms from your compost, and six new recipes for cooks

A fishing system is on its way to SL Colonies: over a hundred real species across the realms, a fight you play from your own HUD, rare fish that move from realm to realm each week, and record boards for the heaviest catches. Before the first line goes in the water, the bait is ready, and some of it you can start stocking up on today.

Worms and maggots from the Compost Bin

Every compost batch now has a chance to leave bait behind. When you collect fertilizer, rich compost, sulphur mulch or fine sulphur mulch, six batches in ten turn up 5 to 10 bait worms or maggots as well: worms about twice as often as maggots. Nothing changes about the compost itself; the bait is a bonus on top.

Worms and maggots are the everyday baits for fresh water, and they will also feed the bait tanks that are coming for anglers.

Peat moss, a new Compost Bin recipe

Peat moss: 10 dung and 10 reed make 10, in 35 hours, at level 0. A handful lowers the pH of a bait tank, so it is the Farmer’s to sell to anglers once the tanks arrive.

Six new recipes at the Cooking Station

All six are level 1 recipes at the Cooking Station, two minutes each:

Recipe Makes From
Sweetcorn bait 10 4 corn
Cut bait 10 2 herring
Shrimp bait 10 3 prawn
Squid strips 10 1 common squid
Peeler crab 4 1 brown crab
Fish feed 10 3 wheat and 1 anchovy

Sweetcorn bait, cut bait, shrimp bait and fish feed can be cooked today from ingredients already in the game. Squid strips and peeler crab are ready for the day fishing opens: common squid and brown crab come from the sea. Fish feed is for salt-water bait tanks.

Each bait is taken by its own kinds of fish, so a cook who keeps a few kinds on the shelf will have something for every angler. The Cooking Station also now lists fish in your inventory, so the catch can go straight into the pot.
