👩‍🍳 New for Cooks, Smiths and Woodsmen: getting ready for grafting

Grafting at the Grafting Table is about to get hands-on, and it will need things only you can make. Cooks, Smiths and Woodsmen each have something new from today.

Cooks: beeswax and grafting wax

Makes Takes Time Level Where
2 beeswax 1 honeycomb 2 minutes 0 Cooking Station
7 grafting wax 1 beeswax, 2 fir resin 5 minutes 1 Cooking Station
  • Beeswax is honeycomb melted down and strained. Any Cook can make it from level 0, and it doesn’t spoil.
  • Grafting wax is what a grafter seals a fresh graft with. Like the real thing it’s mostly resin: melt one beeswax with two fir resin and you have seven seals.
  • The market keeps a little grafting wax in stock so the first grafters can start. Once a Cook’s wax is for sale in a hub or a shop nearby, the market stops adding its own, and it only steps back in if the shelves run dry.

Woodsmen: tap the fir

  • Fir trees can now be tapped for fir resin with a clay pot, the way maple trees are tapped for sap.
  • Chop or tap? Each time a fir regrows you get one or the other: a fir log with your axe, or fir resin with a clay pot. The resin is worth about as much as the log, and the Cooks need it for grafting wax.

Smiths: steel sheets, steel blades and the grafting knife

Makes Takes Time Level Where
1 steel sheet 1 steel ingot 3 minutes 2 Forge
3 small steel blades 1 steel sheet 3 minutes 2 Forge
3 medium steel blades 2 steel sheets 3 minutes 2 Forge
1 grafting knife 1 small steel blade, 1 small wooden handle 2 minutes 1 Forge
  • Steel can now be worked down, like copper. A steel ingot hammers out into a sheet, and a sheet cuts into blades: three small ones, or two sheets for three medium ones.
  • The grafting knife is a small steel blade on a small wooden handle. It’s steel because a graft needs one clean, slanted cut, and steel holds that edge.
  • It lasts 50 uses and earns the Smith 20 crafting experience. A level 1 Smith can put one together from bought blades.
  • The Masters don’t sell it. Smiths make it and trade it between players.

And the rest of the chain

  • Carpenters: every grafting knife needs a small wooden handle, made from 2 oak wood scraps at the Carpentry bench.
  • Seamstresses: every graft is bound with plain wool string, spun from wool at the Spinning Wheel.
  • Beekeepers: every harvest of a hive gives honey and a honeycomb, and the Cooks will want the honeycomb.

Why stock up now: grafting

With the update, a vintner will take a cutting, cut it, join it to its rootstock, bind the join with wool string and seal it with grafting wax. If a sealed graft doesn’t take, you keep your cutting and only the rootstock is lost. Cuttings only come from Choice harvests, so most grafters will want a seal every time.

So every grafter will want:

  • A grafting knife, from the Smith.
  • Plain wool string, from the Seamstress.
  • Grafting wax, from the Cook.

Start building stock now, so the vintners have what they need on day one.
