Until now, every vineyard in the colonies grew the same three grapes. Not any more. The Grafting Table lets you cross vines, raise seedlings with brand-new genes, and found varieties of your own: named by the game for what they show, recorded in your name, and yours to plant, press, trade and sell.
What you can do at the table
Cross two vines. One dab of pollen, and three to five seedlings sprout in the table’s pots. Over seven days they reveal what they inherited: size and vigour first, then ripening, aroma, and finally colour and sweetness. Keep the one you love and it becomes your line, with ten of its seed in your pack.
Graft a vine onto new roots. Same grapes, new ground. Riparia roots shrug off sour soil, rupestris roots get by on less water, berlandieri roots take chalky ground. Cut, join, bind with string, seal with wax if you want insurance, and see whether it took.
Root a cutting into seed. Love a line? Turn its cuttings into seed, ten at a time, and spread it across your whole farm.
Ten genes. Millions of grapes.
Every vine carries ten genes: colour, aroma, sugar, acid, size, vigour, ripening, mildew resistance, drought and lime tolerance. Mix them and the game names what you’ve made: an Early Bold Red, a Crisp White, a Large Vigorous Hardy Red Muscat.
- Hunt for mutations. Every seedling has a 1 in 40 chance of carrying something neither parent had. None of today’s grapes is a Muscat, so the first Muscat in the colonies will be somebody’s lucky find. Will it be yours?
- Trade across colonies. Cross two lines founded in different colonies and the mutation chance jumps to 1 in 25.
- Self a vine to double up a trait only that line carries, until it shows and breeds true. Push it too far and inbreeding takes its toll.
- The rarer your grape, the more it’s worth. A look nobody else has grown is legendary, and the market hubs never stock varieties, so its price is whatever players will pay.
A hands-on app, not a menu
Sit at the table wearing a grafting knife and it opens an app right there in-world, or in your browser if you prefer. Every step is a small, satisfying moment that snaps into place: draw the knife down the cut, press the two canes together, wind the string three times round. Nothing to fail, all of it to enjoy.
Good for the whole colony
A vintner leans on everyone:
- The Smith makes the grafting knife.
- The Seamstress spins the wool string.
- The Cook makes grafting wax.
- The Farmer keeps the compost, lime and sulphur coming for your vineyards.
Brewers earn 50 CXP for every graft and 100 for every cross.
How to start
- Care for a vineyard. Keep it in its pH and moisture band through the week, and a Choice harvest hands you a cutting. New to field care? Watch Field Care 101: https://youtu.be/duIX7b3jYH8
- Visit the Brewer’s Master on Everdale Isle for rootstocks and a vine assay kit, which reveals what your vines are hiding.
- Pick up a Grafting Table for L$600 and start breeding.
