Fishing in SL Colonies has been rebuilt from the ground up. The old click-to-gather pool is gone. In its place is a fishing game of its own: you cast, wait for the bite, and fight every fish to the bank, across a network of realms where the rare fish move every week.
This post is about the new Fishing Pool, the piece land owners put down so everyone else can fish. Here is the setup video:
A second video on how to fish, end to end, is on its way.
For land owners: the pool
- Put it anywhere. Rez it on dry land and it is a pond of its own, or over Second Life water and press Snap to water to lay it on the surface. For its first 15 minutes it shows itself in blue, so you can see exactly where it sits while you place it.
- Pick its water. Fresh or salt temperate today, each with its own fish. You can change it once a week.
- Fish leap and ripples spread across an 8 metre disc. Resize it to suit your pond: it changes the show, not the fishing.
- Anglers fish from up to 40 metres away, any number of them at once. Pools stand at least 80 metres apart.
- Hover text, its name and its colour are yours to set.
The Fishing Spot flag
Every pool comes with a Fishing Spot flag. Plant it on dry land within 40 metres of your pool and your realm appears under Where to fish on the fishing page, with a teleport that lands visitors beside the flag, on the shore, instead of in the water. It does not change how anyone fishes. It is how anglers find you.
For players: how fishing works now
- Wear the free SLC HUD and meter.
- Open the fishing HUD from the SLC HUD’s tool screen.
- Hold a fishing rod. Your first one is free.
- Stand within 40 metres of a pool and Cast.
- When a fish bites, hold Reel to put tension on the line, and let go when it runs. Pull too hard and the line snaps.
Every fish is a real item to cook, trade or sell, and every catch earns Fisherman CXP. Bait changes what bites, and every now and then the line comes up with something that is not a fish at all: weed and odds and ends for crafting, the occasional message in a bottle, and, very rarely, on public water, a pirates’ treasure.
Rare fish move every week
Commons bite at every pool, every day. On public SL Colonies realms, every Monday each realm is dealt its own uncommon and rare fish for the week, and some get an epic. So the best fishing is never in the same place twice, and anglers travel from realm to realm to find it. Legendaries are reached through chains that run across three realms.
The more realms that fish, the more there is to catch: new waters (estuary, tropical, cold, deep sea and reef) open as the network grows, each with fish of its own.
Leaderboards and records
The fishing page keeps a weekly leaderboard that resets every Monday, an all-time board, the rarest catches, and a record for every species. Your first catch could already be one.
