📦 The new Market is open: every realm trades, and Merchants carry the goods

The old market sold everything, everywhere, from one bottomless pool. That’s gone. Every realm’s market now keeps its own stock and its own prices, and the goods have to be carried from one to the next by the people who play here.

The full walkthrough.

How it works

  • Touch a Marketplace HUB and the market opens on the website, signed in as the avatar that touched it. Stay within 20 metres while you trade.
  • Every market has a character. A realm rich in timber sells timber cheap; a realm short of metal pays well for it. Where you trade changes the price by up to 15% either way.
  • Your discount comes from Charisma and your Merchant level, up to 25%. It lowers what you pay and raises what you’re paid.
  • The Grand Exchange in Everdale is the capital: the realm’s reserve, where new stock enters the world and every other market is supplied from. It’s also the only place to post player buy and sell orders at your own price.
  • Anyone can browse every price, from anywhere, at slcoloniesroleplay.com/market.

Courier contracts (Merchants)

This is what replaces the warehouse mini-game. When a market runs short, a contract goes up to carry goods there.

  1. Take a contract on the Couriers board. Starter runs need no deposit; bigger loads need a higher Merchant level.
  2. Pick up at The Grand Exchange, or at a market with too much of something.
  3. Unload at the market you’re delivering to. One crate lands a minute. Step away and it waits for you.

Every delivery earns your colony coins and earns you CXP into your Merchant pool. You have to be there in person, at the market, so the markets become somewhere people meet.

The weekly race. Every Monday, a quarter of the week’s Grand Exchange fees is shared between colonies by the contracts their members delivered. The colony that delivered most is the Courier Colony of the Week: it takes a tenth of that off the top, and its crest goes up on The Grand Exchange. The first race starts this week.

Watch the crates

The new HUB has a crate stack on each side of the stall. One shows how well supplied the market is: a bare pallet means it’s short, and worth hauling to. The other shows goods waiting to leave. While you unload, crates stream from you into the stall, and a countdown floats above your head until the next one lands.

The countdown uses the SL Colonies experience. Accept it when asked and it appears by itself; decline, and your contract still works without it.

For market owners

  • Colonies can set a fee of 0 to 10% on a market they own, paid into the colony treasury. A lower fee makes your market cheaper to buy from. The colony leader or a manager sets it on the colony page.
  • Make it yours. The HUB’s main prim is a plain cube holding the scripts. Keep the cube and you can take the stall mesh off and build your own market around it.
  • A brand-new market starts empty and fills as couriers bring it what it needs.

Own an old HUB? Swap it for free

HUBs from before this update no longer trade. Bring yours to the Station Exchange counter in our in-world store and you’ll get the new one, free:

  1. Touch the counter.
  2. Within a minute, open your inventory, hold CTRL and drag your old HUB onto the counter. A plain drag rezzes it instead; just pick it up and try again with CTRL held.
  3. Let go when the counter is outlined in red. The courier checks it and sends you the new HUB, and you’re told each step in local chat and by IM.

I attempted the swap this morning, and nothing happened. I followed the directions, waiting for the red outline before I let go.

It may be because the Market had been given the name “RuYaad MoonShip Market” so maybe the thing didn’t recognize the Market HUB as a Market HUB? I didn’t think to reset it before I turned it in for the new version.

UPDATE: New Market HUB successfully received! THANK YOU!
